+/- {Plus Minus} - Great Music. Great Band. New Label. - (music reviews)

+/- Plus Minus+/- Plus Minus

james baluyut = vox guitar keyboard
chris deaner = drums sampler
patrick ramos = vox guitar keyboard

Great news! +/- has signed from Teenbeat Records over to Absolutely Kosher and plan to release their third record, Let's Build a Fire
on October 24.

The band features ex-Versus members James Baluyut and Patrick Ramos who latter added accomplished drummer Chris Deaner. +/- mixes mood, texture, knowledge of electronics, and musicianship, to create their own excellence in song craft. At times dark and dreamy only to be abruptly awakened to disjointed odd rhythms and crushing chords which immediately make you think "HOLY SHIT, THIS BAND IS GOOD."

I saw them 2 years ago at SXSW and was immediately turned on to their live show as well as their music. A few months ago I saw them again at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco and they were even better. The coolest part was buying Patrick Ramos a single malt scotch and shooting the shit about how Chris Deaner is a great drummer as well as videographer. You see Chris Deaner does all of their videos which have an experimental and artsy quality to them while still serving the music of +/-. Check out some of the videos on You Tube.

Also, listen to +/-'s free Mp3's HERE.

In short: Great music. Great Band. Check out the new album: Plus/Minus

Sebadoh III - Fully Remastered '91 Extended Album - (album reviews)

Sebadoh III

Sebadoh has released it's 1991 album "Sebadoh III" on a 2 disk, extended, and remastered package. In my opinion it is one of their best albums and when Lou Barlow and Eric Gaffney went electric and also a bit wacky. But we all know wacky is good. Check out some free mp3's of The Freed Pig and Gimmie Indie Rock

Helmet - Monochrome; Page and Co.'s Last album? - (music reviews)

HELMET
Well, what can I say? I think the last tune on Helmet's latest release, Monochrome, says it all.

----------------------------------
"Goodbye"

It can be hard to find your mark
Just light yourself on fire
I'll sound the smoke alarm
Still life will pass you by
You're gone without a trace
Might slow down just enough
To spit right in your face

Goodbye
So long
Now it's time to say goodbye
So long
Goodbye
It might be time to say goodbye

That's entertainment son
You know your death ain't news
We love an accident
I'd love to know it's you
I spent 3 dollars on
These non-slip garden gloves
So I can bury you
Without blistering

Goodbye
So Long
Now it's time to say goodbye

They don't miss you at all
They think you're asshole

-----------------------------------

Page, you and your band recieved one of the largest signing bonuses in the metal industry way back to make Meantime. You killed it. You won. Don't quit. Listen to Chris Traynor...make more albums. We're out there waiting. Monochrome rips as well as every album you have ever done. Screw the big time. Screw the suits. Grab your guitar and jam with your boys. Make it loud and continue to bitch while doin' it. Can't wait to see you again at The Fillmore in S.F. HEAD LINING! You said it right when you opened for and told those Chevelle wusses to quit doin' yoga, take a few shots, do some drugs, screw a bunch of chicks, and start acting like a rock and roll model for fucks sake!

Check out what could be last album! Monochrome

Death Cab's Chris Walla goes solo - Review of unrealesed cover of Clinic's "Distortion" - (music reviews)

Chris Walla So it seems Chris Walla of Death Cab for Cutie has gotten "I wanna do my own thing for now" bug again that most musicians get after being with a band for some time. And who could blame him? He's not only the backbone of Death Cab as as muscian but he's an accomplished producer as well. With a new studio called Alberta Court in which to record, and the label known as Barsuk in which to back his tenatively titled album It's Unsustainable, he's well on his way to "doin' his own thang" and most likely gonna do it well. The last step it seems, is to put together the rest of the band to back him up on stage.

Chris Walla has put up an mp3 cover of the band Clinic, "Distortion" and I have to say that I'm a little iffy on it right now. It's pretty close to the original version but I was expecting a bit more on the production side from Chris as the song sounds a bit dry and the vocal harmonies a little on the home recording enthusiast side. But as always he gets a great acoustic guitar sound and the drums have a straight forward beat with a nice roomy snare that goes "PAH!" and an nice, semi cheesy, 80's keyboard pad underneath it all. I'm definitely looking forward to hearing more and will keep you all updated as to when we get to hear some of Chris's original material.
