Organized Konfusion - The Equinox (1997)

Organized Konfusion was an alternative hip hop duo from Queens, New York. Though not commercially popular, the duo was one of the most respected and acclaimed underground hip hop acts of the 1990s, largely due to the duo's intelligent rhymes, and the groundbreaking lyricism of Pharoahe Monch.
The group's third album, The Equinox, was released in 1997. The album featured an ambitious concept, complete with numerous storytelling skits. The tracks are pure underground hip hop jewels from the golden era. Dope! Get it.

Cella Dwellas - Realms and Reality (1996)

The Brooklyn duo Cella Dwellas first appeared on a Masta Ace b-side and released their debut "Realms `N Reality" in 1996. "Realms `N Reality" is a criminally underrated album that slipped under the radar upon release but is in my opinion among the best records of its period. The LP is aptly titled--the 16 tracks are split between mystical, abstract songs and hard-hitting boom bap. The tracklist runs an hour long, during which there is not one weak song and every track seems just as good as the last.

Looking Up (1994-2000) - Discography

Looking Up was a belgian 6 piece ska-punk band, famous in the 90s on the underground belgian skate scene, as most of its members were skaters themselves, the famous ones being the Dykmans brothers : Julian, lead singer of the group, and Ian who played the guitar. They gave energic gigs all around Europe and played with bands like Millencolin, Voodoo Glow Skulls, or Hardcore band Wise Up.
Looking Up released only one official album, 'Got Another Answer' on the prestigious punk label Epitaph/I Scream in 1998. Their second album was unofficially released in 2000, after the band split. Psych Funk Sa-Re-Ga! (2010)

Psych Funk Sa-Re-Ga! mines decades-old venturesome, clamorous Indian psychedelic funk music. Pressed to vinyl between 1970 and 1983, much of this work was utilized for Bollywood soundtracking purposes during those years. Just as local psychedelic acts took cues from the nearby flourishing Hindi film industry, the region’s film composers were drawn to the sound filtering out of clubs stationed in Mumbai and Poona (now Pune). The comp offers a wealth of the screeching guitar tones and blurting organs you’d expect, with spirited and blissful head trips peppering its 20 thoroughly researched selections.

Psych Funk 101 (2009)

Psych-Funk 101 (1968-1975) is the debut release from World Psychedelic Funk Classics and presents itself as 'a global psychedelic funk curriculum', complete with a 'course description' and 'supplemental listening' in its copious notes (found either on the handsome gatefold sleeve of the vinyl or the 36-page booklet of the CD). The title may be a little misleading since some tracks contain funk and some contain psych with a geniune melding of the two not always apparent, but nonetheless this is chock full of amazing and eye-opening stuff.

The Gaslamp Killer-Gaslamp Killers Mix

“Intense” is probably the word most frequently used to the describe the Gaslamp Killer. His Gaslamp Killers mix helps to explain why — it’s a deranged and blunted jag full of psychedelic beats, trip hop, and creepy vocal samples. Flying Lotus recently called this his favorite mix of all-time, and after that, the recommendation seems superfluous. This is an old mix consisting of older parts, but like all great mixes it sounds brand new. Playlist features various artist from very diverse horizons such as Jazzanova, Pete Rock, Radiohead, Company Flow, Mr Oizo, Dj Krush, Sixtoo or Porishead.

J-Live - First Things First Vol3

This is the latest installment of the mixtape series "First Things First". Like the previous two, Volume 3 is a mix of quality hip hop, both old and new. All of the songs are the first real song on their respective albums. As always, "skits and interludes not included". First Things First Vol 3 is both mixed and hosted by DJ J-Live, with assistance and guest drops from super producer J-Live, and emcee extraordinaire J-live. While they were busy plugging their new 6 song EP "Undivided Attention" (on vinyl and digital November 2nd) they also took time out to correct a mistake made on Volume 2. All three mixes are available for download at j-live.bandcamp.com

Doom - Born Like This (2009)

He’s not the biggest rapper of all time, but DOOM (formerly MF Doom) is among rap’s most consistent players. And with Born Like This the emcee continues his proven formula of cartoon-villain-meets-hip hop beats. The greatest artists are shrouded in mystery, always keeping audiences guessing; Born Like This extends that trend as DOOM emulates the enigmatic super-villain Doctor Doom over killer samples, waging war against the state of contemporary rap.
Throughout the album DOOM reaffirms that he is the king of the underground, breaking convention while retaining good form, favoring freestyle over chorus, and all that while living by his own rules.

1990-2000 One Decade of Hip Hop (by The Rub)

The Rub has been doing the world an undeniably necessary public service in recording their The History of Hip-Hop series of weekly mixtapes. They're unsurprisingly excellent: impeccable selection, flawless mixing.
My favorite thing about these mixes is the fact that hearing hip-hop's finest grouped not by region or style but by year means that every record is uniquely contextualized. They all fit together in a way that I'd forgotten from my ever-advancing vantage point. They are of a piece, just like they were when you lived through them

Roots Manuva meets Wrongtom - Duppy Writer (2010)

Roots Manuva meets Wrongtom - Duppy Writer
With two years passing since last studio offering Slime & Reason, it seemed the alternative remix-dominated lineage running concurrently alongside Roots Manuva’s regular discography was at an end. Not so fast.
Enter producer Wrongtom, fellow London lad, wrestling control for the most cohesive Roots Manuva re-rub record to date. Duppy Writer goes one further than its spiritual predecessors – 2002’s speaker-shaking Dub Come Save Me and 2006 mixes-and-outtakes collection Alternately Deep – slicing apart Slime & Reason alongside choice tracks across Smith’s entire legacy. Wrongtom’s distance from the originals pays dividends, accentuating the lolloping Jamaican flex at Smith’s musical heart and providing a central riff off which almost all 11 tunes – and two skits – sunnily ride

Roots Manuva meets Wrongtom - Duppy Writer Tracklist
1. Butterfly Crab Walk
2. Chin Up
3. Duppy Writer
4. Worl' A Mine

Jahtari - Hot Jahtari Riddims Mixtape

Jahtari is a Netlabel, founded in 2004 by Jan Gleichmar aka "Disrupt". Unlike most netlabels, it focuses on the dub and reggae music genres, with an electronic music approach which it calls "digital laptop reggae", using Commodore 64 or 8-bits sounding softwares to produce the beats. The whole Jahtari catalogue is available for online listening and downloading on their site...impressive openness.

By 2006, Jahtari had started to offer a release on CD in addition to the free downloads, and later produced vinyl releases too. As of 2008, it had signed more than 20 artists, among them Soom T, Pupajim, Bo Marley,or Mungo's Hifi.
